This presentation will be a combination of research findings, personal testimony, practical demonstration, performance and practical application. A review of the research on school belonging with a focus on students of color will open the presentation, followed by a personal account of an experience by a student teacher of the impact on her classroom by merely inviting her students to use Hip Hop to share their understanding. Hip Hop Literacy Students will demonstrate the Hip Hop Literacy composition process followed by a performance. The presentation will conclude with Hip Hop Literacy Co-Director Lamont Muhammad sharing his experiences as a 5th grade teacher using Hip Hop in the classroom.
